ボーイングでのお仕事内容は？
金属技術担当のエンジニアとして、アメリカのBR&Tチームと協力し、新しい供給元の認定、品質問題、プロセス改善に取り組んでいます。具体的には、航空機の金属素材や部品を製造する日本とアジアの企業（中国、インドを除く）とボーイングのアメリカ側のエンジニアの間に入り、技術的なサポートを提供しながらプロジェクトを進めています。
また、日本の地理的な利点を活用して、パートナーのサイトに出張し、プロセスや部品を直接確認しています。ここで得られる情報を共有することで、アメリカにいる同僚が緊急の状況でも迅速かつ正確な決定を下すことが可能になります。私の金属工学の学歴はボーイング日本ではユニークなので、求められた際には自分のスキルセットや経験を活用して彼らの仕事をサポートしています。
ボーイングでの「典型的な一日の過ごし方」は？
私の一日は通常、ボーイングの同僚や社外のサプライヤーとのオンライン会議から始まります。私たちには、部品を製造しているアジアの多くのサプライヤーがいて、彼らはボーイングにとって大変重要で、不可欠な存在です。BR&Tのローカルエンジニアとして、私は日本、韓国、台湾、そして東南アジアを担当しているため、彼らのサイトへの出張の機会が多く、これが私の仕事の中でエキサイティングな部分だと思います。午後には、他のボーイングのローカルチームとの会議を行ったり、オフィスで文書チェックをしたりすることもあります。
エンジニアを志したきっかけは？
私が小学生のとき、母が地元の科学博物館に連れて行ってくれ、星空観察イベントに参加しました。その時、大人になったらこれらの星や惑星を自分の目で見ると決心しました。高校では、映画『アポロ13』に触発されて、宇宙旅行から宇宙旅行のための宇宙船を作ることに夢をシフトしました。実際のキャリアでは、以前は日本のロケットプログラムを支援し、現在は航空機の製造をサポートする仕事に就いています。
ボーイングで働こうと決めた理由は？
ボーイングジャパンのエンジニアという仕事の魅力的な点は、すべての商業プログラムにわたって、あらゆる種類の金属材料や製造プロセスに関わることができることです。このように広範囲にわたる分野をカバーし、最新の技術に触れ続けるのは簡単ではありませんが、決して退屈することはなく、やりがいのある仕事だと思います。
ボーイングのようなグローバル企業で働くもう一つの素晴らしい点は、異なる国や文化のパートナーと協力する機会があることです。日本でアルミニウム押出しの作業をする日があれば、次の日には韓国でチタンの溶融に立ち会うこともあります。異なる国のエンジニアたちが集まり、高品質で航空機の材料や部品を製造するという目標を達成するために協力する姿は、私はとても素晴らしいと感じています。
達成したいキャリアの最終目標はありますか？
私は金属材料の技術的な能力を高め、知見を広げることに興味があります。金属材料は大学時代から最も魅力を感じており、この分野に引き続き焦点を当てていくつもりです。ボーイングでの6年目を迎えていますが、まだまだ学びの機会を楽しみにしています。

ボーイングには多くの経験豊かなエンジニアが働いており、彼ら・彼女らとともに働くことはとても刺激的であり、個人が望めばトレーニングや学びの機会が多々あります。異なる専門性を持った同僚と一緒にプロジェクトに携わり、成功に導くことができる喜びを経験することができると思います。

What is your role at Boeing?
I’m a BR&T engineer specializing in metal materials. I work with the US BR&T team on new source qualification, quality issues, and process improvement. I assist projects by providing technical support between Boeing engineers in the U.S. and companies in Japan and Asia manufacturing aircraft metal materials and components.
Along with my technical skills, I’m also in the right place! I can easily travel to partner sites to see the processes and parts firsthand. This lets my US colleagues make quick and accurate decisions, even when it’s an urgent situation. My background as a metallurgical engineer makes me unique among my Boeing Japan colleagues, so I can also use my skills and experience to support their work.
What is a typical day at Boeing?
My days usually start with online meetings with both Boeing colleagues and outside suppliers. There are many parts suppliers in Asia that are essential for Boeing. My position covers Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, so I have many opportunities to visit these suppliers, which is an exciting part of my work. Afternoons are spent in meetings with other local Boeing teams, or in doing document checks.
Why did you become an engineer?
In primary school, my mother took me to the science museum, where I took part in stargazing. I told myself that I would travel to the stars and planets myself when I grew up. In high school, I saw the movie Apollo 13, and shifted from wanting to travel in space to focus on making space vehicles. In fact, I was previously involved in a Japanese rocket program, while now I’m helping build aircraft.
What attracted you to Boeing?
The exciting thing for me is that I’m involved in all kinds of metal materials and manufacturing processes, across all the commercial programs. It’s not easy to cover this wide area and keep up with the latest technologies—but it’s never boring! Working at a global company like Boeing means collaborating with partners from different countries and cultures. One day I might I work on aluminum extrusions in Japan, the next day be in Korea observing titanium smelting. Engineers from different countries join to ensure the manufacturing of top-quality aircraft materials and parts. It’s amazing.
What are your career goals with Boeing?
I’m interested in expanding the technical capabilities of metal materials. I’ve been interested in metals since my university days, so I want to continue to focus on this field. I’ve now been with Boeing for six years, so I’m looking forward to many more learning opportunities in the future.
What would you say to future Boeing employees?
At Boeing, we are fortunate to have a team of highly experienced engineers, and working alongside them is truly inspiring. The company offers a wealth of training and learning opportunities for those eager to grow their skills. I find great joy in collaborating on projects with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, as it allows us to combine our expertise and drive our initiatives toward success.
