ボーイングでのお仕事内容は？

名古屋のボーイング ジャパン リサーチセンターで研究開発エンジニアリングマネージャーとして、さまざまな日本の産業や学術機関と協力しながら、複合材料、ロボティクス、バイオ燃料に関する技術の開発を進めています。

私のチームは、日本の重工業のパートナーや全国の大学、革新的なスタートアップ、さらにはいくつかの大手自動車会社と共同で研究開発を行っています。エンジニアリングや技術的な分野のみにとどまらず、日本におけるボーイングの重要な関係やパートナーシップを育むことにも力を入れて活動しています。

ボーイングでの「典型的な一日の過ごし方」は？

ほとんどの時間をチームメンバーや世界中のステークホルダーとのコラボレーションに費やしています。私の役割では、人との関係を築き効果的なコミュニケーションを図りながら、技術的な知識を深めることが非常に重要です。

また、日本国内だけでなく、韓国、オーストラリア、ヨーロッパ、アメリカにも頻繁に出張しています。自身とチームの成長と業務の遂行のバランスを取るためには、多くのコミュニケーションや技術的な文書作成が欠かせません。定期的にチームメンバーと話し合い、彼らをどのようにサポートし、活躍を促すことができるかを探求するよう努めています。さらに、重工業企業や学術界のパートナーを訪問し、彼らの活動を間近で見る機会も大切にしています。

日本国内にいながら、グローバルな労働環境の中で、フレキシブルに働いています。朝の時間帯はアメリカの同僚とのオンライン会議を自宅で行い、その後、午前中のうちに出社して、夕方まで勤務します。私のチームはみな毎日オフィスに出社していますが、家族や個人の時間を大切にするための柔軟性も必要だと考えます。休暇を取ることをサポートする文化があり、ボーイングで働くうえでのポジティブな要素です。

直属の7人のメンバーとは隔週で1対1のミーティングを行い、オープンなオフィスの環境で働いているため、密にコミュニケーションをとり、信頼関係を築いています。チームとしてつながりを保ち、協力的な環境を作ることができていると思います。

エンジニアリングマネージャーになりたいと思った理由は何ですか？

実は、もともとは管理職に就くつもりはなく、技術的なキャリアパスを目指していました。しかし、ボーイングでのユニークな機会とタイミングがそれを変えました。製造における技術的なバックグラウンドと、強いチームを構築したいという思いを活かして、日本と協力しながらボーイングの技術の進展を加速させたいと考えました。

ワシントン州エバレットの777X複合翼チームで生産エンジニアとして働いていたとき、私はボーイングの「Learning Together Program」を利用し、全社員に提供される大学の学費補助制度を活用して、学校に戻り経営学修士号（MBA）を取得しました。ボーイングジャパンに異動した際、私はエンジニア職としてスタートし、最初の6ヶ月はその役割に専念しました。そのとき名古屋オフィスには研究開発マネージャーが不在で、私のそれまでの経験とアメリカでの社内でのネットワークのおかげで、自然とその役割を担うことになりました。その仕事は自分に合っていると感じましたし、新しいポートフォリオを持つ新しいチームという環境を楽しみました。数ヶ月間は臨時のマネージャー職を務め、その後、正式にそのポジションに応募し就任しました。

私の技術的なバックグラウンドと、戦略やプロジェクトを形作る機会が、この移行を刺激的で充実したものにしました。また、リーダーシップに伴うソフトスキルの習得や人間関係を築くことにも楽しみながら取り組んでいます。マネージャーになることは非常にやりがいのある経験だと感じています。

ボーイングで働こうと決めた理由は？

旅客機を製造するという技術的な挑戦は素晴らしく、世界中で長期的なキャリアを構築する機会が非常に魅力的だと感じたからです。私は2018年にエバレットの複合翼センターで生産エンジニアとしてボーイングに入社しました。ボーイングの「つなぎ、守る、探求する（connect, protect, and explore）」というミッションには個人的なつながりを感じ、「つなぐ」という側面は特に私に響きます。なぜなら、私の妻が日本人で、11年以上日本に行き来しているからです。シアトルから東京までわずか8時間で飛ぶことができるのは素晴らしく、これは主にボーイングのような航空機メーカーの貢献もあって、私たちの生活する世界を形作っています。

ボーイングは私の5社目の会社であり、ここで長期的なキャリアを築けると考えました。ボーイングがグローバルな機会を持つ素晴らしい会社であることを知っており、夢を実現するために積極的にキャリアを構築してきました。私の経験をチームや他の仲間と共有し、彼らが日本で働く方法や会社のグローバルな舞台での働き方を尋ねられることもあります。モチベーションがあれば、ボーイング内での機会を追求することは十分に可能です。グローバルな機会の可能性は、私がボーイングに参加した大きな理由の一つですが、それだけではありません。ここ日本での役割は私の期待を大きく超え、従来の工場でのエンジニアリング業務に取り組む以上のユニークな経験を提供してくれています。

あなたの仕事の一番の魅力を教えてください

チームと私たちが築く関係だと思います。名古屋の研究開発チームは14カ国からのメンバーで構成されており、みなで創造性を育んでいます。また、アメリカや日本のさまざまな業界や学術界の優れたステークホルダーと協力することは非常に挑戦的で、私たちの仕事を刺激的にしてくれます。

ここで取り組むプロジェクトは、持続可能な航空機や生産システムの未来に焦点を当てており、今後10年、15年、20年の日本の姿を探求し、それがボーイングの広範な目標とどのように一致するかを考えています。私の役割は、技術戦略を導き、チームのキャリア開発を支援しながら、彼らが革新をもたらし、自分たちにとって刺激的で、会社に価値をもたらすプロジェクトに取り組むことを促すことです。

また、次世代との関わりもあり、楽しく興味深く取り組んでいます。地元の大学でボーイングの技術開発や日本での活動について話し合うイベントを開催するなど、学生との関わりは非常に重要だと考えています。この2年間にわたってインターンシッププログラムを実施しており、今年の夏は、実際の業務に貢献し、新しい視点をもたらす4人のインターンを迎え入れる予定です。

あなたのチームの研究分野の一例を教えてください。

私たちのチームの重要な研究分野の一つは、持続可能な航空燃料（SAF）です。これは商業航空の脱炭素化にとって最も効果的な道筋と期待されています。将来的には電動化などの他の技術も役割を果たすかもしれませんが、スケーラブルなバイオ航空燃料の開発は、効果的な脱炭素化のために重要です。

日本は島国で限られた資源と輸入エネルギーへの依存があるため、原料供給に関する特定の課題がありますが、バイオマスや新しい経路に機会もあります。バイオマスは日本にとって重要な潜在的機会です。

SAFは依然として高価であり、従来のジェット燃料と競争力を持たせる方法を見つける必要があります。名古屋のチームは、より持続可能な原料の開発とSAF生産のスケーラビリティとコスト効率の最適化に注力しています。SAFは重要な研究分野であり、私たちのチームはこの分野での進展をリードするアメリカの専門家と密接に協力しています。日本は課題に直面していますが、独自の機会もあり、私たちの取り組みは原料の持続可能性を高め、SAFの生産プロセスを最適化することを目指しています。

SAFに加えて、私たちは航空宇宙製造におけるロボティクスと自動化の未来に焦点を当てた刺激的なプロジェクトにも取り組んでいます。この分野では、日本の産業界の主要なプレーヤーや革新的なスタートアップ企業と密接に協力しています。さらに、日本の大学、業界のリーダー、政府機関と連携し、構造複合材の製造プロセスソリューションを開発しています。

ボーイングでのキャリア目標は何ですか？

リーダーシップと技術的なスキルの両方を引き続き磨き、ボーイングの航空機が世界をつなぐうえで、安全性、品質、効率性に直接的に貢献していきたいと考えています。具体的には、ボーイングの次世代に向けた成長において、日本やアジア全体で大きなリーダーシップの役割を果たし続けたいと思っています。また、未来のボーイングの製品にも非常に期待しています。特に日本において、戦略や実行を形作る大きな役割を担いながら、技術やエンジニアリングに関与し続けることが私にとって重要です。そして、今後数年の間には、より広い範囲でその役割を果たすことができればと思っています。

名古屋での生活をどう楽しんでいますか？

名古屋での生活をとても楽しんでいます。職場は非常に多様性に富んでおり、日本の職場環境では驚くべきことかもしれません。名古屋のチームは14の国籍を持ち、私が今まで働いた中で最も多様なチームの一つです。私たちは、学術界やさまざまな業界からの幅広いキャリア背景を持つ人々を含んでおり、学士号から博士号までの多様な学術的背景を持っています。

個人的には、妻と幼い息子と一緒に名古屋に住むことを楽しんでいます。名古屋には東山動植物園や水族館などの素晴らしい観光施設があり、公園もたくさんあります。名古屋の中心的な立地は、他の主要都市への新幹線や電車での移動を容易にしてくれますし、近くの岐阜山でのキャンプも楽しんでいます。名古屋の食はとても充実していて、特に味噌カツやひつまぶしなどが大好きです。他にも趣味はありますが、私は大半のを仕事と家族に向けられており、良いワークライフバランスを保っています。

What is your role at Boeing?
As a research and development engineering manager, my team and I develop technologies in composite materials, robotics and biofuels in collaboration with Japanese industries, academic institutions, and innovative startups. We conduct research and development with partners in heavy industry, universities and large automotive companies. This shows that our focus is not only on engineering and technical work, but also on fostering deep, important relationships and partnerships for Boeing in Japan.

What does a typical day at Boeing look like?
Most of my time is spent collaborating with my team and global stakeholders. It’s key to my role to build relationships, strive for effective communication and grow our technical knowledge. I also travel extensively across Japan and to Korea, Australia, Europe and the United States. My work involves a balance of both growth and execution, so communication and technical writing is very important. I try to talk regularly with my team to understand how I can support and empower them. I also visit our partners in heavy industry and academia to see their work firsthand.

We have a Western work culture in Japan, which allows for greater flexibility. I can cover early morning meetings with US team members from home, then head to the office mid-morning until late afternoon/early evening.  The team and I work from the office every day, but we understand the need to be flexible to the needs of family and personal time. We are supportive of taking time off, which is a positive aspect of working at Boeing Japan.

The seven people who report directly to me each have a one-to-one meeting with me every other week, as well as lots of daily communications since we work in an open office setting. This really helps us to build relationships, stay connected as a team, and build a collaborative environment.

Why did you become an Engineering Manager?
Originally, I never intended to go into management; my focus was on Boeing’s technical growth pathways. However, the unique opportunities here at Boeing, and good timing, changed that. I wanted to leverage a technical background in manufacturing and my desire to build strong teams to accelerate Boeing’s technology advancements in partnership with Japan.

While I was a production engineer with the 777X composite wing team in Everett, WA, I utilized Boeing’s Learning Together Program, a college reimbursement benefit offered to all employees, to return to school and complete my Master’s in Business Administration. When I joined the team in Japan, I started as an engineer and spent my first six months in that role.

There was no research and development manager at that time, and I found myself naturally taking on the roles of that position because of my experience, and the strong network I had in the company with the US. The job just felt right, and was enjoyable, especially as we are a new team with a new portfolio. So after a few months as the acting research and development manager, I formally applied for and was accepted for the position.

My technical background and the chance to shape strategy and projects made the transition exciting and fulfilling. I also enjoy building relationships, as well as the soft skills that come with leadership. I’ve found becoming a manager to be very rewarding.

What attracted you to Boeing?
The technical challenge of building airplanes is truly special; it's a complex endeavor that contributes positively to the world. Also, the opportunity for a long-term career that can take you all over the globe is very appealing. I joined Boeing in 2018 at the Composite Wing Center in Everett as a production engineer.

I have a personal connection to Boeing's mission to “connect, protect, and explore.” The “connect” aspect especially resonates because my wife is Japanese, and we've been traveling to and from Japan for over 11 years. The ability to fly from Seattle to Tokyo in just eight hours is remarkable, and it's largely thanks to aviation manufacturers like Boeing who have really connected the world.

Boeing is actually my fifth employer, and I saw it as a place where I could build a long-term career. I knew it was a great company with global opportunities, so I worked hard to make that a reality for me.

I often share my experience with my team and other people who ask how they can work in Japan or in Boeing’s global work. You can definitely pursue the opportunities you see within Boeing if you're motivated. The global opportunity was a significant reason for me to join, but it wasn't the only one. My role in Japan has far exceeded my expectations, providing unique experiences beyond that of working in a factory on engineering issues, as important as that is, too.

What's the best part about your job?
The team and the relationships we build, definitely! Our amazing team has people from 14 different countries, which fosters creativity. Collaborating with outstanding stakeholders in the US and Japan across various industries and academia can be very challenging, but that also makes the work exciting.

Our projects focus on the future of sustainable airplanes and production systems, exploring what the next 10, 15, or 20 years will look like in Japan and how that aligns with Boeing's broader goals. My role involves guiding the technical strategy, supporting the career development of the team while also empowering them to innovate and work on projects that are exciting for them, and which add value to the company.

I also get to engage with the next generation, which is fun and interesting. We've organized student events at a local university to discuss Boeing's technological development and work in Japan. Student engagement is very important, and we have an internship program that has been running for the last two summers. This year we’re welcoming four interns who will contribute real work and bring a fresh perspective.

What would be an example of your team’s research?
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a big one. This is seen as the most effective near-term carbon reduction pathway for commercial aircraft. While other technologies like electrification may play a role in the future, developing scalable bio-aviation fuels is crucial for carbon reduction.

Japan is an island nation with limited resources and a heavy reliance on imported energy, so there are challenges related to fuel and other raw materials. At the same time, there are opportunities here, particularly in biomass and emerging pathways like eSAF (fuels derived using renewable electricity sources). Biomass presents a significant potential for Japan.

SAF remains expensive, however, and we need to find ways to make it competitive with traditional Jet A fuel. The team in Nagoya is focused on developing technologies for more sustainable feedstocks and optimizing SAF production for scalability and cost-effectiveness. Our team is collaborating closely with experts in the US who are leading SAF development. Our work aims to address Japan’s unique opportunities by enhancing feedstock sustainability and optimizing production processes for SAF.

In addition SAF, we are engaged in exciting projects focused on the future of robotics and automation in aerospace manufacturing. We collaborate closely with established Japanese industries and innovative startups in this field. Furthermore, we are developing manufacturing process solutions for high-rate structural composites in partnership with Japanese universities, industry leaders, and government agencies.

What are your career goals with Boeing?
I want to keep building both my leadership and technical skills, so I can have a direct impact on the safety, quality, and effectiveness of Boeing aircraft as they help to connect the world.

More specifically, I’d like to continue playing a large leadership role in Boeing’s next generation growth in Japan, and Asia broadly. I’m also excited about Boeing’s future products as I look into the future. It’s important for me to stay engaged with technology and engineering while also taking on a larger role in shaping strategy and execution, particularly in Japan, but perhaps also in a broader area in the coming years.

How is life in Nagoya?
I really enjoy being here, both personally and professionally. The workplace is incredibly diverse, which is surprising for Japan, often seen as a homogeneous society. Our team consists of 14 nationalities including many from Japan, one of the most diverse teams I've ever worked with. They have a wide range of backgrounds: from academia, from different industries, and with educational credentials ranging from bachelor's degrees to PhDs.

Personally, my wife, young son, and I love living in Nagoya. There are great attractions like the Higashiyama Zoo and Aquarium, as well as plenty of parks. Nagoya's central location makes it easy to travel to other major cities by train, and we enjoy camping in the nearby Gifu Mountains. The local food is fantastic, especially dishes like misokatsu (pork cutlets covered in a miso-based sauce) and hitsumabushi (thinly-sliced grilled eel on rice). While I have other hobbies, most of my time is dedicated to work and family, and I find a good balance in Nagoya.

What would you say to future Boeing employees?
A career with Boeing gives you the opportunity to experience many different roles and projects, all within one company. You can work on a variety of programs, take on different challenges, and even live and work in locations around the world. Once you’re established at Boeing, you have the opportunity to explore completely different areas of the business.

Some people might see Boeing as a legacy company of a past generation, but it offers a wealth of new opportunities. Boeing does have solid culture and an important mission but also vast opportunities. It’s a place of great potential, one where you can build a fulfilling career and work on exciting projects.
